Each candlestick is signed by the make, with his initials’AD’ surmounted by a symbol of a star. The chiselled bronze stem decorated with foliage supports a sconce with detachable nozzle featuring a beaded rim. The whole stands on a triform zoomorphic base with hoof feet which are separated by Greek anthemion palmettes. 26 cm high x 12.5 cm wide. Overall, the candlesticks are in very good condition and show some signs of age and usage. The ormolu retains a good colour. The foundry was established in Paris in the late eighteenth century by Jean-Baptiste-Maximilien Delafontaine and, by 1870, is listed as being located at 10 rue de l’Université. The Delafontaine foundry produced decorative works of high quality and was one of the most renowned of all the Parisian foundries. The main competitor to the Barbedienne foundry, they cast works by some of the leading sculptors of the nineteenth century, including Antoine-Louis Bayre and Mathurin Moreau.
