This is an authentic antique Edwardian 1900s white cotton broderie anglaise cutwork and whitework lace and crochet summer lawn or tea dress. The dress is fully lined with a lightweight net gauze. The bottom tier of the cutwork skirt attaches to this inside lining with the top portion of the skirt hanging over it. The gauze lining continues under the lower tier of the skirt with lace trim around the hemline. The chest and collar feature a soft light ivory lace over the net lining. The neck has 6 metal stays to help it stand up straight. These stays are covered with thread but have some rust on them. The front of the skirt is 5 shorter than the back of the skirt. The sleeves consist of 3 layers; the outer layer features pin-tucks, cutwork and crocheted lace around the cuffs with a longer layer of soft lace hanging from the inside, the inside sleeve features another layer of lace attached to the net lining with a ruffled lace cuff. The gauze lining closes with a row of silver tone metal hooks and fabric loops on the skirt portion with dark metal hooks and eyes up the back. The waist has 2.5 long inserts to hold it’s shape and closes with 4 alternating metal hooks and eyes in the back. The outer layer of the dress also closes with a row of metal hooks and fabric loops up the skirt and metal hooks and eyes up the back of the torso on one side as to keep the design in the back. Some of these hooks and eyes are a dark metal and some are silver tone. The dress has been thoroughly cleaned by soaking it overnight in a specialized laundry detergent for antique textiles to remove spots, stains, yellowing and odors and to restore it to it’s original color. The only issues are 2 tiny pin holes in the sheer cotton fabric on the front center panel of the skirt and one on the side panel, as shown in the last photo. Other than those it is in excellent condition and although delicate is wearable. This dress came from a Newport Rhode Island Bellevue Avenue mansion known as the Harold Brown Villa. The dress was stored in the home by late Mrs. Eileen Gillespie Slocum for decades. Eileen was born in 1915 and was the daughter of Mrs. Irene Muriel Sherman Gillespie who was born in 1887 and William Watts Sherman. This dress may have been worn by Irene or another relative. The family were members of the wealthy American upper class of the gilded age era. I will be listing other similar dresses from the same collection. Shoulder: 14 (shoulders slope so it is approximate). Top of Sleeve: 21.5 (from neck to cuff). Arm Opening: 16 around (measured on the inside lace layer, the outer layer is larger). Hips: 36″ (measured 8″ below waist). Length of Torso: 14 (from shoulder to waist). Front of Skirt Length: 45.5. Back of Skirt Length: 50. Total Front Length: 60 (from shoulder to hem). (Measurements were taken by laying dress flat and doubling the necessary widths).
