Very Rare Civil War Matched Pair of Wooden Crutches, Used by Wounded Soldiers, in Hospitals, etc. Nice, VERY RARE ORIGINAL MATCHED, FULL LENGTH, COMPLETE Civil War. Even more special is that one of the pair is marked “USMD” (United States Medical Department). Scans show it all. Wood support is nicely tapered on each, and rounded on corners. Very nicely made, with nice aged patina. Armpit pieces are padded and both have the original tarred canvas covering. Nicely attached with early hand-made nails. Both of the crutches still have the original tin “protectors” at the opposite (bottom) end. A couple of small initials carved in the wood. I have included a variety of photos for your reference. VERY RARE ACCESSORY, ESPECIALLY USMD MARKED AND IN THIS CONDITION. Nice to find a COMPLETE PAIR of MILITARY MARKED AND USED CIVIL WAR CRUTCHES like this in such decent shape. Super addition to a variety of collections or displays. Would also be a GREAT DECORATOR OR WALL HANGING OR CORNER DISPLAY. Would make a great addition to ANY SORT OF MEDICAL OR HOSPITAL RELATED COLLECTION OR DISPLAY. Would also look good in a doctor’s office or hospital office as a decorating item. OR GENERAL CIVIL WAR COLLECTION OR DISPLAY. WOULD ALSO MAKE A GREAT DECORATING ITEM. Each measures about 48″ long by 1″ x 1 1/4″; armpit pieces measure about 9 3/4″ long by about 2″ x 2″. Antique Victorian American Civil War era purple taffeta semi mourning day gown, with large crinoline skirt, with tapered waist bodice, with black lace and beadwork detail to neck and sleeves. The dress fastens to the bodice front via a series of hooks and stitched loops, with the skirt having an integral pocket, plus there is also a small hidden coin pocket to the waist band. The dress is photographed using a crinoline petticoat which is not included in this sale. AGE Circa early 1860’s SIZE Bodice Length (shoulder to waistband) – 15″ Bust – 30″ Waist – 24″ Sleeve – 20″ (shoulder to cuff) Skirt Length Front – 40″ Length Back – 42″ The gown is in a good condition for age, although there is a small “v” tear to the bodice. Circa early 1860’s. Length (shoulder to waistband) – 15. Sleeve – 20 (shoulder to cuff). Length Back – 42. The gown is in a good condition for age. Although there is a small “v” tear to the bodice, plus one or two other tiny holes to the fabric. The beadwork trim to the collar has started to come away and is lose, plus the cream lace trim to the inside of the collar has started to come away, and would need a stitch or two to repair. Most of the hook/stitched loop fastening to the bodice are missing (pinned into place for photographs), plus a small section where skirt meets waistband has a split to the seam so would need a stitch repair. Th dress is over 150 years old, and whilst all of the major faults have been listed, there are other minor issues, such as loose threads and tin holes to the skirt, where old length adjustments have been made.
