Extant Wooton Patent Secretary, Superior Grade, Very Rare #0271

Superior Grade Wooton Patent Secretary with Carved Winged Griffin Gallery. A HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT DESK ON LOAN TO THE INDIANA STATE MUSEUM. Antiquarian Traders has loaned this extant example of a Wooton Superior Grade desk with the winged griffin gallery. Matches the original catalogue in 1874 and is the only one to survive. We are proud to share it with the hundreds of thousands of visitors in Indianapolis where it was produced. The History of the Wooton Desk. These elaborate desks were designed and patented by William S. Wooton, born in 1835, the eighth of thirteen children. Patent in 1868 (#83,896). His most important patent #155,604 was granted on October 6, 1874 for “Wooton’s Patent Cabinet Office Secretary”. This ingenuity lead to full scale production in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1874 and continued through 1891, although Wooton retired and became a preacher in 1884. He died in 1907 at the age of 72. Wooton’s patents merged fine hand craftsmanship with the new technologies of the Industrial Revolution. The design of the desks provided an ingenious solution to the businessman’s increasing problem of organization to keep up with the rapid expansion and growing complexity of business during this historical period. Wootons list of recorded customers demonstrates his accurate assessment of the businessman’s needs and the historical importance these desks played in the formation of American commerce. Presidents Grant, Garfield, Harrison, Queen Victoria, John D. Rockefeller, Joseph Scribner and Jay Gould were but a few of the luminaries who depended upon these desks to organize their daily routine. Probably the most recognized piece of the Victorian Era, the Wooton desk is the centerpiece of any 19th century American furniture exhibition. Most museums have The Desk of the Age in their collection. A 94 page book, published in 1983 by the Indiana State and Oakland Museums, is devoted solely to the history of the Wooton Desk Company and the evolution of 19th Century office. C1895 antique OAK & GLASS APOTHECARY cabinetry 72′ long x 8′ high Nebraska

72 LINEAR feet of circa 1895 oak APOTHECARY store cabinetry. From a drug store in Nebraska – for the last 20-25 years has been used in an antique store in western Iowa. IMPRESSIVE find with so many linear feet of antique cabinetry. Cabinets are 8′ tall – with multiple sliding glass doors and numerous small apothecary drawers. The back of the cabinets have some pencil marks with the shop owner that bought & used this in circa 1896/1897. The individual I bought this set from gave me TWO of the ORIGINAL apothecary bottles with the shop owners name on them – they will be passed along to the new customer. Approximately 8 – 10 of the porcelain drawer pulls are missing/and/or broken. SIX of the oak sliding glass doors are devoid of glass – THE REST of the NUMEROUS glass doors & panels appear to have original, early wavy glass. Original golden oak varnish – with lots of carved detail on the pilasters and crown molding. The base cabinets on one side of the unit have marble base boards. The unit was set up in the store facing each other – one wall, each had a 36′ long unit. The cabinetry separates every 6′ and is tied together by crown molding pieces. You can see them separated on my warehouse driveway before I stored them inside. Ideally these could be reconfigured if 36′ of wall space was not available. Rare to find an original intact wall unit set like this – THESE RARELY come on the market. Serious inquiries only – PLEASE. Let me know if I missed something.
