Showing great sensitivity of expression and playful stance, this 1890s outside row prancer was created by master carver Charles Looff during his time in California. This horse is one of the rare and lifelike examples carved by John Zalar during the one year he worked for Looff in California. A detailed bridle restrains his glass-eyed head borne on an arched neck with ample flowing mane and forelock carved in high relief. Historical racing saddle is girthed over a blanket, holstered six shooter on the right, with saddle pack aft. The chest is encompassed by a fancy breastcollar with tassels. In very good condition, furnished with a genuine horsehair tail, stripped to reveal the natural wood and construction seams. Possibly a military horse, this tasteful example has been kept in a climate controlled house for the past 35 years. Stripped to natural wood, the realism, expression and patina of Zalars work is world class and fit for public display. Height: 47.5 inches from top of base, 52 inches 53.5 total height.
