Stunning 1840s Brocade Dress 18th Century Silk / Georgian / Victorian Antique
A truly stunning dress dating to the 1840s / early Victorian era. Incredible fabric – silk brocade, blue background with undulating flowers and vines in pale silver (in some lights gold) Almostly certainly the fabric is 18th century, but i can’t say with 100 % accuracy – the design and colouring are right for the 18th century, and if you look closely you will see that the upper part of the bodice (which would have likely been hidden with lace) is pieced together asymmetrically where the dressmaker has tried to make the most of the available fabric (i’ve only seen this construction once before, on another 1840s piece made with 18th century fabric) The dress is made in one piece, the bodice fitted but not boned, with a shallow point at the front waist, hook fastenings and a round high neck. The armholes are piped, the sleeves flaring in a graceful curve with silver fringe trim at the cuff. The skirt forms a full dome, pleated all around in to the waist, with cartridge pleating at the back, and i hidden pocket. Hand sewn, the bodice cotton lined. Some slight wear, small marks and a couple of very small holes. No under arm staining. The back right bodice seam is open in three places for 5cm, 2cm and 9cm. Approx measurements – bust 32.5 waist 23.5 shoulder 17 skirt front length 35. I do not give partial discounts. All items sent boxed and signed for.
